“Learning and collaborating over Teams prepares you for the world of remote and hybrid work. Earning my degree online while remaining in my role at work allows me to immediately implement strategies and to ask more informed questions that make me a better Chief Medical Officer.”

Reflections
I aim to better understand how we can use data to inform our decisions about to whom we send patients and where, as well as how we can decrease delays in access to care, achieve sustained recoveries, and decrease costs of care without ever compromising the quality.
I pursued an MSQM: Health Analytics degree so that I can best leverage data analytics and even large language models to create efficiencies and free up our people to educate, advocate for, and support patients and clinicians. I chose Fuqua and the MSQM: HA due to the access to professors who are actively impacting how care is delivered nationally and globally.
Before Fuqua
I oversee our medical team and medical initiatives and strategies nationally. I consult for all lines of property and casualty business in which my company is engaged, as well as for our group health plan, our wellness plan, and worker's compensation plan for our own employees. I am responsible for designing solutions to misaligned incentives, creating policy and procedures that are based on best practices and evidence-based medicine, responding to proposed legislative and regulatory changes, and marketing to external stakeholders. I create partnerships with clinicians and facilities, all to provide exceptional care to patients, limiting delays in care, and shepherding them to a sustainable recovery. I collaborate with multiple disciplines, including underwriting, marketing, claims, legal, bill review, and safety and health/loss control, to anticipate, prevent, and/or minimize issues and their potential impact.
After Fuqua
I aim to grow in my role as Chief Medical Officer by leveraging our data more effectively. My goal is to act as a bridge between our data analytics team and our claims team, facilitating informed decisions that lead to improved outcomes.
Advice to Industry Peers on the Benefits of Completing and MSQM: HA Degree
I see the MSQM: HA as an MBA for health care. I believe the business and coding knowledge with a focus on health care make me a better physician leader and a more effective Chief Medical Officer. Data is powerful and, when evaluated appropriately, informs innovation and strategy.
BONUS
My son Alex is a rising junior at Duke and on the track and field team. I love that we are both Duke students at the same time. (My older son, Sam, graduated from Duke in 2022.) With Alex graduating in 2027, Sam graduating in 2022, and me graduating in 1992, our reunion years will align. Yay!
