MMS: Duke Kunshan University student Xiyue (Lauren) Liu

“I once believed that building a strong team meant assembling individuals who excelled in every area and could handle everything on their own. Over time, I’ve come to understand that true strength lies in diversity—a team of people with varied backgrounds and perspectives brings forth ideas and insights I could never have envisioned alone.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

I was drawn to Fuqua’s emphasis on understanding people beyond their resumes—a rare and refreshing approach. Writing the "25 Random Things" essay was an absolute joy; it felt like Fuqua truly wanted to know me. I finished it in one sitting, in just two hours, without a single edit, which made me feel like I was already a part of something special.

My decision was sealed during Fuqua Around the World, where I met alumni who were accomplished yet approachable, collaborative, and brimming with energy. They embodied the kind of community and future I wanted to be a part of. Now that I’ve been here for a while, I can confidently say I made the right choice. The culture, the people, and the opportunities have exceeded my expectations—I’ve never once looked back or regretted my decision. Fuqua has been everything I hoped for and more, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next. Let’s go, Team Fuqua!

Before Fuqua

I have experience in product management, management consulting, NGOs, and financial services. These roles reinforced my passion for multidisciplinary problem-solving and aligned seamlessly with Fuqua’s holistic approach to business education. Pursuing an MMS was a natural step to becoming a versatile, adaptive professional ready to excel in any challenge.

After Fuqua

After graduation, I plan to return to China to build a career in the tech or consulting industry. Drawing on the critical thinking, data analysis, and presentation skills I’ve developed at Fuqua, I aspire to help businesses address key challenges in strategic planning, business expansion, and data-driven decision-making. As a motivated entry-level professional, I’m excited to immerse myself in dynamic environments, tackle complex problems, and make meaningful contributions that drive impact and growth.

5 Tips for Maximizing Your Time at Fuqua

  1. Make the most of Fuqua by exploring its many resources. Check Fuqua Connect regularly for updates, participate in diverse activities, and build connections with people from other programs and industries to expand your network and perspectives.

  2. Engage actively in every class. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share your ideas, or participate in discussions. Fuqua’s professors are world-class, and your curiosity and involvement will greatly enhance both your learning and classroom dynamics.

  3. Plan a Fuqua bucket list to ensure a fulfilling experience. Include fun goals like hiking, attending the Winter Formal, mastering case interviews, or trying rock climbing. Having clear objectives will make your time here purposeful and exciting.

  4. Bring variety to your everyday life. Try new foods, pick up a hobby, or tackle a small challenge outside your comfort zone. Adding these little surprises will make each day feel fresh and vibrant.

  5. If you’re invited to a party, a game night, or any other event, say yes. These moments often lead to the best memories and help you make deeper connections within the Fuqua community.

My Favorite Professor

My favorite professor is Preeti Vani, who taught us Management and Organization. We were the very first class she officially taught, and she quickly became a standout figure for her professionalism and dedication. Even before the course began, she took the time to understand our preferences regarding group work and assignment formats, ensuring that our voices were heard and our opinions valued.

Her teaching style was incredibly engaging and hands-on. We took on roles such as real estate agents negotiating deals, management consultants providing strategic advice, and racing club owners making competitive decisions. These immersive activities made learning enjoyable and time fly by. More importantly, after each exercise, she guided us to uncover the deeper principles and insights behind our decisions, all backed by her extensive research. This evidence-based approach equipped us with practical skills to succeed in the business world.

On top of that, Preeti is one of the sweetest and most inspiring people I’ve met. She lights up every class and her passion for life is contagious. Seeing her always left me feeling energized and inspired!
