“The entire program has been a huge push for me out of my comfort zone! I have been a neonatologist for over 15 years and have developed deep knowledge in my focused area of expertise. Participating in this program moved me from a ‘teacher’ role to a ‘student’ role overnight. It's been humbling and exciting to learn about finance, accounting, strategy, and management in industries that I know very little about. While it has not been easy, it has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience. It's been incredibly satisfying to push myself in new ways and know that I am still capable of growth. I particularly enjoyed the Negotiation elective I just completed. I have never considered myself a savvy negotiator, but the insight I learned through this course helped me lean into these discussions more skillfully and confidently.”

Reflections
The Health Sector Management (HSM) program was part of my initial draw to the Duke Fuqua MBA degree. As a physician in a leadership role in my organization, I was eager to learn more about the business side of medicine and how to use that information to better advocate for the needs of my patients. My experience in the HSM program has exceeded my expectations. The faculty has been insightful and informative as they instruct on topics across the health care landscape. In addition, they bring in outside health care industry leaders to dive deeper into key areas. However, I’ve learned the most from the diverse perspectives of my fellow HSM classmates, whose work experiences allow them to share insights that enrich our classroom discussions.
Before Fuqua
I am a neonatologist and medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital and an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. I have responsibilities in conducting research, educating medical trainees, and leading our clinical practice.
After Fuqua
During my MBA program, I was asked to step into a senior director leadership role representing neonatal care for Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. There, I have greater visibility into the organization's financial, organizational, and strategic workings and the opportunity to speak about the evolution of our growth and expansion utilizing what I have learned in the Duke Fuqua program.
Five Best Experiences in the WEMBA Program
- Triangle Training with your new team!
- Late-night discussions with people you just met in the JB Duke lobby.
- Campus walks appreciating the trees and buildings. Great people watching.
- Lunchtime chats with professors. It's great to get to know them as people outside of class.
- Feeling of accomplishment as you gain new knowledge in the classroom.
