Why I Chose Fuqua

Looking back, I chose Fuqua at a perfect moment in my career – I was hungry for something more. You know that feeling when you've done well in your field, but you're craving a bigger perspective? That was me. I loved the analytical side of accounting, but I had this growing fascination with how business works across different cultures, and I couldn't wait to dive in!

What drew me to the Global Executive MBA was the chance to learn not just from textbooks, but from real people doing amazing things in different corners of the world. I fell in love with how Fuqua focused on working together rather than competing – it just felt right for understanding global business. Plus, the way they approached building real-world business skills across international markets was exactly the challenge I was looking for.

I knew my accounting expertise was valuable, but I was excited to grow beyond the numbers into true leadership. I wanted to learn how to bring out the best in diverse teams and build meaningful connections across cultures. Working with peers from fintech startups to global energy companies would transform my technical mindset into something more powerful - the ability to understand, connect with, and lead teams in our complex global business world.

Before Fuqua

Before Fuqua, I led financial operations as Assistant Controller at Mattamy Homes' Southeast Florida Division. I managed core accounting functions including budgeting, forecasting, and month-end reporting. My analytical work supported strategic decisions by identifying key performance insights and operational efficiencies while ensuring compliance with corporate standards.

After Fuqua

Six months before graduation, I stepped into the role of VP of Finance at Willstrong Construction—a thrilling opportunity that came sooner than I expected. I’m already using what I’ve learned at Fuqua, especially in leadership and strategy, to tackle challenges, streamline processes, and help the company grow and succeed.

5 Things You Must Do During a Residency

  1. Set Up a Routine: Balance academics, networking, and personal time. Build in workouts for energy, family calls for grounding, and downtime for recharging. Being intentional with your routine helps manage the intensive pace.
  2. Make Dinner Count: Stick to a “no hotel dining” rule (unless schoolwork piles up). Use dinners to connect with classmates and immerse yourself in the local culture. Being in a foreign country, this was my time to explore, try new cuisines, and experience the world beyond the classroom—it added depth and joy to every residency.
  3. Practice Saying “No”: As a “yes” person, it’s okay to skip some activities. Take time to recharge when needed and don’t feel guilty about it—you’ll be more present when you rejoin.
  4. Be Fully Present: Whether it’s a class discussion or a casual conversation, immerse yourself in every moment. These experiences are what make residency special.
  5. Embrace Discomfort: Challenge yourself daily—volunteer to lead, try unfamiliar activities, and speak up in class. Growth happens outside your comfort zone, creating both professional development and memorable experiences. Plus, there’s no safer place to experiment than among supportive classmates.

The Global Executive MBA ROI

For me, the ROI of the GEMBA program is deeply personal and far-reaching. It’s not just about advancing my career—it’s about the growth, connections, and confidence I’ve gained along the way.

When I was interviewing for my new role as VP of Finance at Willstrong Construction, just six months before graduation, I leaned on my GEMBA classmates in a way I never expected. I reached out for advice on interview strategies, negotiating tips, and leadership insights. The responses I received weren’t just helpful—they were thoughtful, candid, and empowering. My classmates weren’t just peers; they became my trusted advisors, cheering me on every step of the way!

The program also transformed how I approach challenges. From global residencies to intense coursework, I developed leadership skills and strategic thinking that I apply every day in my new role. These aren’t abstract lessons; they’ve given me the tools to tackle real-world problems with clarity and confidence.

And then there are the friendships. The late-night study sessions, laughter over coffee breaks, and shared victories created bonds that will last a lifetime. For me, GEMBA has been a life-changing investment—fueling my career, strengthening my leadership, and surrounding me with a community that’s as inspiring as it is supportive.
