Why I Chose Fuqua

What impressed me most about Fuqua in the application stage was the 25 Random Things. Fuqua is the only school with this type of requirement, which cares not only about how solid your academic background is but, more importantly, how unique you are and how you can bring that to MQM.

Fuqua became my dream school when I saw that everyone is a leader while also being cooperative, working hard, and playing hard. I also had the opportunity to learn more about the look and feel of the Fuqua spirit through the interview with alumni. Receiving the offer call from Fuqua was the best moment of 2024, and I accepted immediately!

Before Fuqua

My marketing role at Disney principally centered around qualitative elements, so I wanted to learn more about the dynamics behind the metrics for sustained data-backed success. By completing a specialized Master’s degree in Business Analytics, I will be able to explore more quantitative attributes. The skills I acquire will empower me to contribute solid, data-driven insights for decision-making that extend beyond qualitative or intuitive perspectives.

After Fuqua

I plan to specialize in marketing analytics and become a consumer analyst, providing reliable data support and insightful analysis for business decisions. This will build on my marketing experience, and be driven by the analytical practice that I have learned in MQM.

My 5 Favorite Spots at Duke

  1. Organ in Duke Chapel: Listening to an organ performance with exceptional acoustics at Duke Chapel is a wonderful way to relax, find peace, and refresh during a break from classes.

  2. Student Wellness Center: I won’t tell you that the best piano acoustics on the entire Duke campus are on the first floor of the Student Wellness Center! Just walk in, and you might catch a maestro performing.

  3. Baldwin Auditorium: Don’t miss the orchestral performances!

  4. Art Annex: Visit the Art Annex to enjoy free crafts and creative activities.

  5. Brodhead Center: You have to try this dining option. Pad Thai at Soy & Ginger is my favorite!

My Favorite Fuqua Professors

Professor Jiaming Xu

Modern Analytics is undoubtedly challenging, but Professor X goes above and beyond to break down abstract concepts and models into small, easily understandable pieces, using vivid and relatable examples to explain them. I can truly feel Professor X’s passion for teaching. For example, he created a song by AI for the PyTorch Optimization Loop, which helps us memorize the steps in an interesting way. The learning process is tough, especially for those who don’t have previous coding experience like me, but this is one of the most fascinating courses in the MQM program!

Professor Ryan Burk

In the Data Infrastructure course, Professor Ryan Burk meticulously explains the logic behind each query step. To grab our attention, he does something unconventional when emphasizing key points. Using “The Price Is Right” show database, he brings dull concepts to life with engaging examples. He’s always incredibly patient in answering all my questions.
